Work Schedule: M-F 7am to 3:30pm


The Preschool Teacher for Head Start directs the daily learning activities of students through the use age appropriate lesson plans.  S/He creates and maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning, both through physical classroom materials and instructional activities; Implements approved regular goals while utilizing techniques necessary to motivate learning in small children; Makes regular assessments of instructional materials for classroom and communicate need of replacement or repair as needed; and Maintains 1-10 child/staff ratio at all times.

Salary offered commensurate to experience.


  1. Maintains and implements Head Start educational goals and objectives through planning, activities and observations and documents each child’s progress. 
  2. Identifies children’s special needs and makes referrals as appropriate.
  3. Monitors children’s health and safety. 
  4. Identifies and accesses behavioral issues requiring involvement of program resource staff.
  5. Acts as a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse and neglect. 
  6. Supervises children in classroom, in corridors, in restrooms, in cafeteria and the playground. 
  7. Maintains environment that is safe and conducive to learning. 
  8. Keeps equipment and materials in good repair and is responsible for classroom Inventory. 
  9. Identifies achievement levels of each student and provide ongoing evaluation of progress.
  10. Each classroom must earn a passing score on this Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS).
  11. Must involve parents in their children’s education and confers with parents on students’ progress. 
  12. Assist with counseling of parents for their academic, personal and social skills development.
  13. Makes at least two home visits a year and a minimum of two parent-teacher conferences.
  14. Recruits parents as classroom volunteers and complete in-kind documentation. 
  15. Participates in parent meetings and school activities.
  16. Becomes familiar and knowledgeable with Head Start Minimum Performance Standards, Minimum Standards for Childcare Licensing, UAMS Policies and Procedures and other guidelines and regulations and adhere to same.
  17. May perform other duties as assigned. 


 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field plus one (1) year of experience in Early Childhood Education or related field
  • Intermediate proficiency level with computers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish (read, write and speak)


  • Establish and maintain continuous communication between parents and staff.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
  • Become thoroughly knowledgeable of all required program standards and regulations and adhere to same.
  • Participate in school sponsored activities; attend faculty staff meeting as required.
  • Obtain continued job related education/training by attending workshops, continuing educational courses and meetings.
  • Maintain educational requirements for continued certification/licensure, child care licensing and Head Start. 
  • Participate in prescribed in-service programs. 

Additional Competencies:

  • Must be able to work 40 hours a week (7:00a-3:30p). 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team at any location assigned and has good attendance
