    The Public Safety Patrol Police Officer works under the general supervision of the UAMS Chief of Police and the direct supervision of a Patrol Sergeant. A UAMS police officer is a highly visible, critical public safety individual and must be committed to excellence, professionalism and community service. We are seeking those who possess integrity, dedication, honesty, moral character and sound judgment.

    The Public Safety Patrol Police Officer is responsible for enforcement of traffic and criminal laws along with parking regulations. Our officers are supplied with firearm and uniforms.

    Candidates must undergo an extensive hiring process which includes a stringent background investigation/security clearance, psychological evaluation, a structured interview, drug screening, and other testing according to the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and
    Training.

    This position is governed by the Law Enforcement Standards of Arkansas and UAMS policies.

    Salary: $33,250 annually ($15.99 hourly).

     

     

    Responsibilities

    1. Manages stressful situations courteously, tactfully and calmly in a professional manner
    2. Exercises good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
    3. Responds quickly to emergency situations and calls for service without unnecessarily jeopardizing the safety of oneself, other members of the police department or the public
    4. Utilizes common-sense understanding in order to execute written, oral or diagrammed instructions
    5. Proficient in the use of firearms and the operation of police vehicles
    6. Observes situations objectively and analytically, record and report them clearly and concisely both orally in writing
    7. Ability and willingness to perform moderately physical work
    8. Ability and willingness to perform work indoors, outdoors and in a vehicle
    9. Exhibits good character (i.e. courteous, friendly and empathetic) as determined by a detailed background investigation
    10. Attends related training classes and schools as needed
    11. UAMS is a very diverse campus therefore officers must be at ease with members of other ethnic, cultural, and social groups
    12. May perform other duties as assigned by superior officers or administration

     

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School diploma/GED required
    • Must be certified by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards Training Academy as a Police Officer
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Possess a valid Driver's License (Must have Arkansas Driver’s License by date of hire)

     

    Critical Competencies and Skills:

    • Knowledge of law enforcement practices, methods, and techniques
    • Knowledge of traffic and criminal laws, and departmental regulations and procedures
    • Maintains control of persons by use of minimal force needed in required situations
    • Skill in the operations of fire arms
    • Possesses basic computer skills with a general knowledge of Microsoft Office software
    • Ability to properly prepare and write police reports
    • Communicates and maintains a good rapport with the campus population
    • Practices appropriate enforcement of parking regulations
    • Ability to operate motor vehicles used in work activities
