The Physician Assistant will augment a physician's ability to provide medical services to patients; collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, and provide direct patient care services.

Assessment of health status of patients - Obtains a relevant health and medical history, performs a physician examination both focused and comprehensive, depending on patient needs, identifies health risks and needs, updates and records changes in health status, assesses mental and functional status.
Diagnosis - Formulates an appropriate differential diagnosis based on history, physical exam and clinical findings, identifies needs of the individual, and family as a result of the patient interview (history) and physical exam.
Develop a plan of care - Provides an acceptable plan of care that maximizes the patient’s health potential and takes into account: ordering of appropriate diagnostic tests, identifying and prescribing appropriate pharmacologic agents when needed, and identifying and planning non-pharmacologic interventions when appropriate, and develops a plan for education of the patient and their family or caregiver. Consults with physicians and other health professionals when needed.
Implementation of the plan - Plans are based on established priorities and include: accurately conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing pharmacologic agents under prescriptive protocols, providing relevant and timely patient and caregiver education, and making appropriate referrals to other health professionals. Follows up on the client by phone calls, rounds, scheduled visits and lab results. Facilitates patient participation and self-care when able, and provides information to patients and families in order for them to make decisions and choices about their health care. Promotes optimal health of the patient by including preventive and health promotion activities into the plan of care, participates in clinical pathway development and quality management activities.
Documentation and Billing - Responsible for appropriate documentation and billing notations for care that is given.
Professional Development - Seeks out opportunities to improve skills and knowledge.

Previous experience in cardiothoracic surgery or other surgical specialty
