    Work Schedule: 7am to 3:30pm (40 hours) per week


    The Preschool Teacher for Head Start directs the daily learning activities of students through the use age appropriate lesson plans.  S/He creates and maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning, both through physical classroom materials and instructional activities.  S/He implements approved regular goals while utilizing techniques necessary to motivate learning in small children and makes regular assessments of instructional materials for classroom and communicates need of replacement or repair as needed.  S/He supervises students in all activities both inside and outside the classroom and maintains 1-10 child/staff ratio at all times. 


    The Preschool Teacher assists with counseling of parents for their academic, personal and social skills development.  S/He ensures that everything is in place in case of your absence; identifies achievement levels of each student and provides ongoing evaluation of progress.  S/He identifies and accesses behavioral concerns requiring involvement of program resource staff and establishes and maintains continuous communication between parents and staff.  S/He encourages parent involvement to increase literacy skills and classroom participation.  S/he becomes thoroughly knowledgeable of all required program standards and regulations and adhere to same and participates in school sponsored activities; and attends faculty staff meeting as required.

    This is a provisional position.  Provisional positions are funded by external grants or contracts with established end dates.  When the grant expires or is not extended, the provisional position will be eliminated.  Employees in provisional positions may apply for other positions at UAMS when their provisional position ends.


    • Maintains and implements Head Start educational goals and objectives through planning, activities and observations and documents each child’s progress. 
    • Identifies children’s special needs and makes referrals as appropriate.
    • Monitors children’s health and safety. 
    • Identifies and accesses behavioral issues requiring involvement of program resource staff.
    • Is a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse and neglect. 
    • Supervises children in classroom, in corridors, in restrooms, in cafeteria and the playground. 
    • Maintains environment that is safe and conducive to learning. 
    • Keeps equipment and materials in good repair and is responsible for classroom Inventory. 
    • Identifies achievement levels of each student and provide ongoing evaluation of progress.
    • Each classroom must earn a passing score on this Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS).
    • Must involve parents in their children’s education and confers with parents on students’ progress. 
    • Assist with counseling of parents for their academic, personal and social skills development.
    • Makes at least two home visits a year and a minimum of two parent-teacher conferences.
    • Recruits parents as classroom volunteers and complete in-kind documentation. 
    • Participates in parent meetings and school activities.
    • Becomes familiar and knowledgeable with Head Start Minimum Performance Standards, Minimum Standards for Childcare Licensing, UAMS Policies and Procedures and other guidelines and regulations and adhere to same.
    • May perform other duties as assigned. 


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field plus one (1) year of experience in Early Childhood Education or related field.
    • Intermediate proficiency in computers (preferably MS Office)
    • Must possess a valid Arkansas Driver's License with reliable transportation with valid liability insurance and willingness to use for work purposes. 

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bilingual English/Spanish skills (read, write and speak) 


    • Establishes and maintains continuous communication between parents and staff.
    • Maintains professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
    • Becomes thoroughly knowledgeable of all required program standards and regulations and adhere to same.
    • Participates in school sponsored activities; attend faculty staff meeting as required.
    • Obtains continued job related education/training by attending workshops, continuing educational courses and meetings.
    • Maintains educational requirements for continued certification/licensure, child care licensing and Head Start. 
    • Participates in prescribed in-service programs. 

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to work 40 hours a week (7:00a-3:30p). 
    • Ability to work collaboratively as a team at any location assigned and has good attendance.
    • Constant bending, standing, sitting and repetitious movement
