  • Overview

    The Post Doctoral Fellow will provide technical assistance and basic laboratory management for a research project. Duties will include but are not limited to: cell culture maintenance, routine biochemical and molecular assays, and assistance with managing mouse breeding colonies (including husbandry and genotyping). The Post Doctoral Fellow will be supervised by the Principal Investigator (PI) and as the PI delegates, by other personnel. He/She may be called upon to instruct students or other personnel in technical procedures and supervise their completion and have chief responsibility for behavioral studies.

    Salary is based on experience

     

    This is a provisional position. Provisional positions are funded by external grants or contracts with established end dates. When the grant expires or is not extended, the provisional position will be eliminated. Employees in provisional positions may apply for other positions at UAMS when their provisional position ends.

    Responsibilities

    • Discussing hypotheses and objectives regarding molecular and behavioral studies with supervisor and other laboratory personnel.
    • Determination of key variables, primary and alternative methodologies.
    • Ensuring the application of scientific rigor and reproducibility for interpretation, including proper statistical validation. 
    • Serves to achieve broad research goals, including dissemination of findings.
    • Processing cell and tissue samples for analysis, assay concentrations of gross biomolecule classes, assess relative quantities of specific gene products or other analytes. Includes mixing of buffers and other solutions, operation of tissue homogenizers, chemical assays for protein content and spectrophotometric measurement of nucleic acids, western-blot analysis and real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction; precise pipetting skills are required.
    • Serves to acquire experimental data for publication and other dissemination.
    • Maintain mouse colony and lead in mice behavioral studies.
    • Assist with mouse colony maintenance and thorough records kept.
    • Writing manuscripts, assembling data and other figures, submitting for publication.
    • Preparing posters and slide presentations and making presentation of same at scientific conferences and local seminars.
    • Demonstration of research techniques.
    • Supervision of trainees in initial stages of their own technical work.
    • Serves the mission of educating trainees and enhancing the efficiency of the laboratory

    Qualifications

    PhD in biology, chemistry or related field plus 4 years in a biomedical research laboratory including 1 year of experience working with mice and or rats as research subjects required. Experience with rodent Behavioral testing experience preferred.
