  • Overview

    UAMS’ Department of Biomedical Informatics is a vibrant research environment that uses computational methods to optimally use health information. The department hosts multiple NIH/NCI funded projects and provides biomedical informatics insights to the entire UAMS community. The expertise and research interests of DBMI faculty cover multiple key disciplines of Biomedical Informatics, including Imaging Informatics, Bioinformatics, Clinical Research Informatics, and Semantic Web technologies in the life sciences.

     

    The Research Informatics Analyst II operationalizes data management processes for scientific research and clinical research projects. Operational duties include: Using technical skills such as coding and report writing to perform data processing; system development, validation, and implementation; report identification; and mitigation of project risks. 

     

    This is a provisional position.  Provisional positions are funded by external grants or contracts with established end dates.  When the grant expires or is not extended, the provisional position will be eliminated.  Employees in provisional positions may apply for other positions at UAMS when their provisional position ends.

    Responsibilities

    Project Management

    • Operationalizes data management processes including data processing, system development, system validation and system implementation.
    • Identifies, reports and prevents or mitigates project risks.
    • Provides progress reports on system development, system validation, system implementation, data collection and data processing.
    • Monitors data and workflow processes to mitigate project risks.
    • Tracks production and communicate problems/backlogs to the project team and management.
    • Calculates and monitors productivity standards and process metrics.
    • Uses metrics and study parameters to project data volume and resource needs.
    • Serves as primary point of contact for the study sponsor and the principal investigator.
    • Holds regular data management and informatics team meetings to communicate project information.
    • Communicates project status to study and department leadership.
    • Represents data management and informatic in project-related cross-functional meetings.

    Documentation Processes

    • Designs and maintains research study forms for use by peers and other team members.
    • Creates and maintains study form instructions, medical record abstraction guidelines and data processing operations used by peers and other team members.
    • Creates the study protocols, data dictionaries, forms and documents to create basic logical data models.
    • Creates and selects the written procedures, study protocols, interviews and observations used by peers and other team members to create data and workflow diagrams.
    • Maintains standardized data management documentation including: data definitions, logical data models, functional specifications of information systems used, data access and control procedures and associated records, audit findings and corrective/preventative action responses.

    Technical Processes

    • Creates basic logical data models and workflow diagrams.
    • Develops data screens, error checks and workflows in proprietary and open-source data systems.
    • Inputs, imports and reconciles study data.
    • Identifies and resolves data discrepancies.
    • Selects the controlled terminologies and standards; codes data using standard terminologies, data transformation and data profiling.
    • Develops data screens, error checks and workflow in proprietary and open source systems.
    • Creates and maintains functional specifications for data systems including screens, data structure, data discrepancy identification and resolution, system interfaces, automated data processing, algorithms and workflow.
    • Performs and manages functional user acceptance testing and usability testing for information systems and system interfaces.
    • Creates specifications for and oversee the development, testing and distribution of study reports.
    • Writes SQL code to produce ad-hoc reports.
    • Prepares and makes presentations to UAMS and external faculty.
    • Monitors data quality and completeness.
    • Respond to internal and external audits by initiating corrective and preventative actions, when necessary.

    • Interacts with and assists the public and co-workers in a professional and friendly manner.
    • Demonstrates effective communication skills; communicates accurate and complete information; maintains strict confidentiality when necessary.
    • Demonstrates positive working relationships with co-workers, management team, and ancillary departments; follows the Core Concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care and the Basic Code of Conduct Guidelines.
    • Assists internal and external stakeholders as needed with exceptional customer service.

    May perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in biomedical informatics, computer science or science-related area
    • Three (3) years of experience working with data or in a computing and/or biomedical informatics field
    • Required skills include:SQL programming, analytical skills, ability to use data and process modeling, and knowledge of form and data base design
    • Applicants should also have the ability to perform system testing, to validate and evaluate information systems and knowledge of information system implementation processes and change control

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with any of the following principles is considered a plus: ICH GCP; open source solutions for clinical research like LimeSurvey, OpenClinica, REDCap, etc.; standard expressions of CDISC controlled terminology; FAIR guiding principles; programming languages like Python, Java, R, SAS, etc.

    Competencies:

    • Ability to effectively draft and maintain process documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures and work instructions
    • Knowledge to successfully acquire and manage data from electronic health records and medical devices
