  • Overview

    The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is seeking an experienced and innovative leader for the position of Director of the UAMS Library. UAMS, the only comprehensive academic health sciences center in Arkansas, includes colleges of health professions, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and a graduate school as well as the UAMS Medical Center (hospital and outpatient center) located in Little Rock, ArkansasThe Northwest UAMS campus located in Fayetteville and Arkansas Children’s Hospital located in Little Rock as well as other UAMS and Regional Programs campuses located throughout the state support UAMS educational programs at various levels including primary care residencies. 

     

    In total, UAMS has over 10,000 employees and nearly 3,000 students including all of our health care locations throughout Arkansas.   

     

    UAMS Library Description

    • The Library is staffed by 33.65 FTEs: 12 librarians, one public history professional, eight non-librarian professionals (primarily advanced education degrees), and 12.65 staff positions
    • The Library is a 44,0002 foot facility strategically located at the heart of the Little Rock campus plus a separate 1,5002 foot Historical Research Center Annex also located on campus
    • The AAHSL Annual Statistics for 2018 indicates that the UAMS Library fits the profile of the ‘composite’ or average health sciences library in annual budget, collection expenditures, number of personnel, composition, and total expenditures

    Responsibilities

    The Director provides leadership and vision in strategic planning that includes policy development, implementation and evaluation of operations and services, allocation of resources in an effective and efficient manner, coordination of personnel administration, and representation of the Library to UAMS administration, other UAMS units, and outside entities. 

    The Director leads a management team composed of the heads of Collection Management, Access Services (responsible for facility and general library operations), and Education and Research Services, and the directors of the Historical Research Center and Student Success Center and the Assistant Director of Library Operations (business officer).

     

    UAMS Library Responsibilities

    • Library and information services supporting research, clinical care, education and outreach
    • Student Success Center including academic assessment and tutoring, writing and presentation skills center, and testing center, and support for student laptop and mobile devices
    • Historical Research Center collection and curation of artifacts and items related to the history of the health sciences in Arkansas and the UAMS Archives
    • Collegial/contractual relationships with UAMS Regional Programs, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and medical systems, university, and other partners across the state

    May perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Degree from an ALA-accredited graduate school
    • At least five years of experience successfully leading an academic health sciences library and/or a major library unit
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
    • Knowledge of key issues, emerging technologies, and best practices in health sciences education and librarianship
    • Record of active participation in the profession

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Additional advanced degree in education, information science, or health/biomedical sciences discipline
    • Membership in the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals
    • Record of leadership role in profession
