  • Overview

    The Public Safety Dispatcher answers and operates several incoming telephone lines (including an emergency line); dispatches calls to UAMS Police Officers; assists patients, visitors, and other departments on campus; monitors closed circuit CCTV and building alarms; operates Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminal; and checks for and enters warrants, enters stolen property, vehicles, maintain files, etc.

    Salary: $14 hourly


    • Dispatches officers to call locations and provides all information necessary to ensure officer safety.
    • Acknowledges officer’s radio traffic and relays any pertinent ACIC terminal information.
    • Makes officers aware of incoming traumas, suspicious people or activities on campus or surrounding area, and/or dangerous circumstances.
    • Communicates with and assist UAMS shuttle bus drivers with traffic problems.
    • Answers and operates incoming telephone lines (including an emergency line) and takes messages for administrative staff.
    • Provides information to and assists patients, visitors and staff.
    • Contacts appropriate law enforcement agencies for officer assistance and information.
    • Prints and passes on ACIC information on stolen and missing/wanted persons; enters property and vehicles stolen from campus into NCIC files; and maintains back-up documentation on any person, article, or vehicle, entered into ACIC/NCIC files officer’s original reports.
    • Retrieves ACIC information for officers, detectives and administrators.
    • Maintains various records and logs for information purposes. 
    • Secures keys for patients parking overnight in the valet lot.
    • May perform other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma/GED PLUS one (1) year of experience as a dispatcher/operation of public safety communication equipment
    • Must have basic computer and communication skills
    • Working knowledge of the 10-codes, phonetic alphabet, FCC regulations regarding radio traffic, law enforcement regulations

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC) Level I & II Certification Requirements:
      • Satisfactory completion of a one-day Level I certification class
      • Subsequent completion of a three-day Level-II certification class
      • Completion of a one-day recertification class every two years


    • Know and understand UAMS Police procedures regarding:
      • Secure and intrusion alarms in the hospital buildings, War Memorial Stadium, and off site distribution center
      • Fire Alarms (Code Red)
      • Weather alarms (Code Grey)
      • Major Disasters (Code Green)
      • Incoming traumas
      • Bomb threats (Code Amber)
      • Presidential visits
      • Hit Procedure for wanted people and property found on campus
      • Burglary and hold up alarms in the Methadone Clinic
