  • Overview

    The Director of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) is responsible for the general administration of the the University of Arkansas for Medical Science (UAMS) Occupational Health and Safety Department and its program activities and acts as the Safety Officer for UAMS. The Director manages and coordinates activities related to occupational safety, environmental affairs, fire safety, radiological safety and biological safety. The Director is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students visitors and patients on the UAMS campus, and for keeping the UAMS campus in compliance with all local, State and Federal occupational safety and environmental codes and standards.


    About the Department of Campus Operations:

    The Campus Operations Department provides the services to support the education, health care, and research missions at UAMS.  Campus Operations is comprised of Engineering & Operations, Occupational Health & Safety, Operational Support Services, Planning Design & Construction, and Parking Operations.  These departments provide support services for approximately 4,000,000 square feet of building space and 1,500,000 Square feet of parking decks on a campus of approximately 100 acres.  Campus Operations also provides support for UAMS Regional Program facilities and the NW Arkansas campus.

    Campus Operations will be leading UAMS in the implementation of a major Energy Services Performance Contract (ESPC) for the main campus.  This is the largest ESPC contract in the nation for an academic medical center.  The department will also be leading the campus through a master facilities plan that will encompass current and future space utilization and address underlying infrastructure issues.  The department of Campus Operations is working hard to optimize facilities and insure patients, families, students and researchers have a facility that can maximize their success.

    Salary offered commensurate with experience


    • Plans, directs and administers a comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety program
    • Develops departmental program strategies, and sets departmental program priorities
    • Plans and monitor departmental budgets, using national benchmarking statistics to monitor OH&S safety operations
    • Develops campus policy and procedures required to maintain regulatory compliance
    • Evaluates UAMS compliance with applicable local, state, and Federal safety and environmental regulations
    • Coordinates Joint Commission Environment of Care compliance efforts
    • Consults with Department Heads, Faculty, Staff and students on safety issues
    • Provides for education on employees on applicable policies, principles, regulations and control measures
    • Evaluates the effectiveness of campus occupational and environmental health activities
    • Designs and maintains comprehensive databases to monitor all occupational and environmental safety activities
    • Directs a program of inspection designed to ensure that campus facilities are in a safe condition
    • Evaluates all UAMS buildings regularly for life safety code violations
    • Trains safety representatives, campus wide to participate in the safety audit program
    • Manages all issues related to insurance claims for UAMS
    • Maintains property and vehicle inventories for the campus
    • Serve as the UAMS Liaison with all Local, State, and Federal Regulatory agencies and professional societies
    • Serve on the UAMS Safety Coordinating Committee
    • Maintains all required environmental regulatory licensures for UAMS
    • May perform other duties as assigned


    The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:


    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health or related field
    • 7 years of progressive experience in Occupational Health or related field including five years of proven staff supervision
    • Knowledge of Federal and State codes and regulations pertaining to a major medical center including Joint Commission Environment of Care Standards
    • OSHA’s Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response standard (HAZWOPER) 40 hour training with an 8 hour annual refresher
    • Professional License/Certification in Safety, Biological Safety, Industrial Hygiene or similar certification
    • CPR/AED Certified
    • Must be capable of sound independent judgment during stressful situations
    • Demonstrated team building and leadership, exceptional verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Must have the ability to motivate and lead groups and programs and manage multiple projects and initiatives
    • Must have interpersonal negotiation skills, problem solving and analytical skills, presentation skills and the ability to motivate and lead groups and programs

    Preferred Professional Experience and Characteristics:

    • Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field
    • 5 years of progressive experience in Occupational Health or related field including five years of proven staff supervision
    • TJC Requirements & working with public agencies preferred
    • Demonstrated track record of mentor-ship and evidence of having developed others in their careers
