    The Pharmacy Specialist will perform the duties of a pharmacist working in a specialty pharmacy in compliance with policy and state/federal regulations and will act as supervising pharmacist when the Pharmacy Manager is not present in the pharmacy.  The Pharmacy Specialist works in cooperation and a professional manner with all other pharmacy departments and all providers in assigned clinic.

    Salary commensurate with experience.


    Position's primary focus will be on non-Medicaid contracts. However, focus of this position can be adjusted to address changes in call volume and other tasks and staffing patterns involving call center personnel.

    • Uses clinical knowledge and protocols to adjudicate prior authorization claims and provide information to healthcare providers regarding plan-specific pharmacy benefit design and, where appropriate, therapeutic alternative drug choices.
    • Additional responsibilities include creating and updating the electronic pharmacy records created by these inquires.
    • Maintains distributive, and clinical competency in compliance to policy and sufficient to meet  pharmacy standards for patient safety and effective therapy, including clinical monitoring, assessments, adherence and  compliance; dispenses and performs clinical activities to these standards.
    • Consult with physicians on appropriate therapeutic alternatives, monitoring of drug therapy, and provide drug information to professional staff upon request in all three phases of care.
    • Supervises pharmacy support personnel, which includes activities performed, work allocation between staff, and work performance (quality and quantity of work).
    • Delegates aspects of the practice of pharmacy to a pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician within the parameters of their job description.
    • Obtain prior authorizations/appeals and navigate third party prior authorization processes successfully.
    • Review drug-drug interactions and manage patient medication regimen accordingly.
    • Provides direct supervision to pharmacy interns and pharmacy technicians working with the pharmacist. Direct supervision means that the pharmacist has reviewed the prescription or drug order prior to it being dispensed, has verified the final product, and is immediately available on the premises to direct the work of interns and technicians and respond to questions and problems.
    • Implements policy and regulatory required record systems and processes for the pharmacy.
    • Maintains compliance to company formulary.
    • Practices the concept of clean claims through compliance to proper pharmacy billing procedures.
    • Works with supervisory staff to continually develop and implement ideas for delivering high quality, cost effective services.
    • Participates in the pharmacy on call rotation as applicable.
    • Works independently; demonstrates leadership in the practice of pharmacy.
    • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures; developing and implementing new strategies and procedures (performance improvement) including best practices.
    • Maintains compliance to URAC accreditation standards.
    • Knowledge of accreditation standards and requirements and ability to develop and maintain record keeping systems and procedures.
    • Other tasks as assigned by Management.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • BS in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy and one (1) year of experience working in a pharmacy in a hospital or retail setting
    • Certification as a licensed Registered Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas or ELIGIBLE for licensure upon hire
    • Must have ability to supervise and train employees, students and residents to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
    • Experience with extensive literature search capabilities and interpretation of the clinical literature

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • PharmD and three (3) years of experience working in a pharmacy in a hospital or retail setting
    • Post-graduate residency with emphasis in Managed Care or Evidence-Based Medicine
