Overview

The Plain Language Program Specialist is responsible for developing, editing, testing, and implementing health education materials for use by patients and community members. They work with CHL program staff, other UAMS departments, external partners, and patient and community representatives in achieving those goals. The specialist assists in the development and delivery of other CHL communications (e.g. for purposes of business development and teaching). Some in- and out-of-state travel required (up to 10%).

Salary offered commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, edits, creates, and field-tests health education materials using plain language best practices and knowledge of health behavior theory.
  • Manages inventory and ongoing review of UAMS patient education materials.
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of existing and prospective CHL health literacy services and external relations (e.g. field testing, training, consulting) through promotional content (e.g. social media, blogs, articles), client/partner presentations, and special projects.
  • May perform other program and service-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in health-, writing-, or communications-related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in health education, patient education, health promotion, or health-related communications/writing field
  • Intermediate proficiency with using Microsoft operating system and Microsoft 365 (or Office) software and experience in using Adobe Acrobat DC or other Adobe products to modify documents
  • CITI Training (within first 2 months of employment)
  • Project-specific training to be completed during first 2 months of employment
  • Excellent technical writing skills (samples required) which demonstrate mastery of grammar and usage along with ability to organize and convey complex scientific information
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to self-manage workload and organize projects and tasks for timely completion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in health, communications, or writing
  • Bilingual English and Spanish
  • Experience interacting with electronic medical records or providing patient care
  • Certified Health Education Specialist, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Nurse
