Specimen Testing: - Conduct analysis of biological samples to determine presence of normal and abnormal components in assigned section(s). - Perform quality controls or quality check materials and perform corrective action as required. - Enter test results and other data related to analysis and communication of results into relevant computer information systems or other document archival systems. - Provide technical information about specimen collection, sample transport, sample identification, required documents, test methods and other related technical information to LPN’s, physicians or laboratory clients. - Responsible for correct processing and storage of specimens. - Gives practical instructions and training to nurses, residents and physicians and may include test ordering. Patient Phlebotomy: - Use patient identifiers to match information on requisition and labels. - Successful performance and completion of blood draws from patients using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medial testing, transfusions, donation, or research. Collection of various specimens, properly labeling specimens, timely transportation to the clinical laboratory, and documenting collection information as appropriate. - Successfully utilizing techniques using appropriate collection methodology, which may include straight needles and/or butterfly needles. - Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture and or other specimen collection as required. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment for patients before, during, and after the collection process. - Works closely daily with internal clinic staff and various departments to resolve issues with patient blood draws. - Maintains strict confidentiality when necessary. - Utilizes proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure patient and personal safety. Exercises all laboratory safety precautions and adheres to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals. - Correctly identifies the containers required for each individual test and ensures proper storage for that specimen. - Places specimens in correct packing lists to send to reference labs. Instrument Maintenance: - Set-up, maintain and operate lab equipment used to process samples. - Operate, calibrate and maintain equipment used in specimen analysis. - Perform basic troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing. - Maintain equipment used for personal protection and safety such as eyewashes, safety showers, biohazard containers, chemical cabinets and personal protective equipment. - Maintain temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers and/or incubators. Support Duties - Daily quality control review. - Organize and clean workspaces. - Ensure adequate supplies required for daily operations are available by restocking inventory, preparing reagents, rotating stock as required. - Communicate with clinics, physicians and external staff regarding sample integrity issues and/or other issues related to clinic testing. - Use laboratory computer systems to order tests, generate results, generate reports, document results and communications, interpret results, and other lab duties related to inventory, testing method verifications and quality control. - Telephone duties may involve calling the reference labs to add-on testing, or investigating lost or cancelled specimens. Creates and manages regulatory study binders and maintains all regulatory documents.   Additional duties may be assigned to this position.
